Since 1921 the Hessian Genealogical Society has devoted itself to bringing together those with a special interest in heraldry and genealogy; the society specializes in cultivating all aspects of family history and in supporting its members in their research activities. The society members work closely together in securing the resources needed, share their research results and advise and consult each other on their various projects.

The organization's main area of activity concentrates on the three provinces of the former Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt which consisted of Upper Hesse, Rhenish Hesse (1816-1945) and Starkenburg. This corresponds to the area covered by the Hessian State Archives Darmstadt.

It is a great advantage for the society that our offices and archive are located on the same premises as the Hessian state archives; the fact that so many resources are available in one building greatly simplifies all research activities. There are, for example, the state archive's microfiche copies of the parish registers of the provinces of Upper Hesse and Starkenburg from 1808 until 1875, which are available to the society.

We also keep a large library of national and international publications from other genealogical societies.

We did, however, suffer a terrible loss during the bombing of Darmstadt in 1944 when our complete archive located in a basement room of the city palace - which housed the state archive at the time - fell victim to fire.

The society has been a member of the Association of Genealogical Societies in Hesse ("Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Familienkundlichen Gesellschaften in Hessen") since 1954.
Other members are the Genealogical Society in Electoral Hesse and Waldeck ("Gesellschaft für Familienkunde in Kurhessen und Waldeck e.V.") in Kassel and the Genealogical Society Nassau and Frankfurt am Main ("Familienkundliche Gesellschaft für Nassau und Frankfurt am Main") in Wiesbaden. This umbrella organization publishes the genealogical magazine "Hessische Familienkunde".

Our membership fee includes four magazines per year. The magazine comes with two inserts; one is the genealogical news ("Familienkundliche Nachrichten"), a national enquiry and ad journal, the other is the society newsletter ("Vereinsmitteilungen"), which informs our members of internal issues and events etc.

An ancestral list of Hesse ("Hessische Ahnenlisten") is issued at random intervals; members of the societies can publish their ancestral lists here for a very reasonable fee. The publication is distributed to all members free of charge.

In 1987 the society started issuing a series of publications dealing with more extensive studies, usually parish family registers. While the authors do not receive any fees for their often time consuming work, publication nevertheless always requires extra funding by the society. Members receive a 20% discount on the list price; subscribers to the complete series receive 30% discount.

One of our missions  on behalf of the umbrella organization is the work on the Hessian roll of arms ("Hessische Wappenrolle"), which lists old and modern coats of arms of the Hesse region and publishes them in the magazine "Hessische Familienkunde" (please see the special leaflet).

At present our society has approximately 1,000 members. As we are a registered as a society acting in the interest of science the annual fee of 30 Euro is tax deductible.

The society provides information for reimbursement of postal charges and verifies genealogical resources to a specifiable extent. Investigations for non-locals will only be conducted after a cost estimate; the research will be taken up once the enquirer has agreed to the estimate. Usually interested parties conduct their own research in our archive; our honorary staff will be happy to assist any visitor with guidance and information.

Our collection of heraldic and genealogical works such as family registers, ancestral lists, relevant books and magazines and extensive registers is constantly growing due to donations and bequests, which are extremely appreciated. Ongoing publications are regularly amended and a genealogical database is being built up.

We are especially grateful when members leave their research results with us. Extensive computer-based genealogical studies should be created with special genealogy software and be GEDCOM compatible. This quasi-standard allows us to transfer data from one genealogical program to another.

Our offices and archives in the "Haus der Geschichte", Karolinenplatz 3 (ground floor) are open for visitors on Monday from 09.00 until 19.00 and on
Thursday from 09.00 until 11.30.
To visit us please register with the custodian in the state archive reading room.

Our archive has:

over 150 volumes of general genealogical literature; 250 magazines of genealogical and historical societies, also from Belgium, Alsace, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Texas and Ohio; newsletters, chronicles, annals, parish registries, church registries, etc.

over 400,000 index cards

heraldic lists, chronicles and collections

over 4,100 volumes of regional literature, many of them with genealogical information

The reference library can be visited during opening times. Members can borrow books for as long as 14 days.

On the web site http://wiki.genealogy.net/index.php/Hauptseite you can conduct a variety of searches for research data as well as place and family names.

The Hessian Genealogical Society receives funding from the "Verein für Ehrenamt Darmstadt".
