Catholic Parishes in Lippe

Many thanks to the archive of the Vicar-general of the Archdiocese Paderborn, without their friendly assistance the information for this page could not have been obtained!

In the years 1538 to 1541 the Land Lippe joined the Reformation of Martin Luther under the leadership of Philipp Landgrave of Hessen, who was the guardian and feudal lord of Earl Bernhard VIII. zur Lippe. In some villages, the priests had started to preach Lutheran even before. After Earl Simon VI. took over regency, Lippe became Calvinistic.
In the 17th and 18th century, there was not a single Catholic parish in the entire Land Lippe. After the Reformation, Catholic life was maintained in the noble families in the north of Lippe, around the residence of the Jesuits in Falkenhagen, at the Farm of Paderborn in Schwalenberg, and in the villages Köterberg and Grevenhagen.
After the Catholic church and the Protestant territorial church were legally accorded equal status in 1854, and thus people who did not belong to the Reformed confession were no longer forced to have their births, weddings and deaths registered in the Reformed parishes, the Catholic parishes

came into being. Due to the above-mentioned restraint by the sovereigns existing until 1854, christenings, weddings and deaths of Catholics have been registered in Protestant church registers for a long time.
At the R.C. council in Trient in 1563, all priests were obliged to keep christening and wedding registers for canonical reasons. Approximately since 1614, registers of deaths had to be kept too. Since the Reformation in Lippe had already begun around 1520 and was almost terminated in 1538/41, there are no Catholic parish registers in Lippe from the time before the Reformation.
For the above-mentioned reasons, only the Catholic parish records are of interest for genealogical research in Lippe which existed when the civil records were introduced in 1876.
